Sumiko-Shiage (Urushi)



Description:

Sumiko-Shiage, Urushi,  Lit. charcoal polishing. A lacquer technique which involves applying a thick paste of charcoal powder and urushi onto the surface resulting in a matte to semi-matte black surface with a fine granular texture. It is typically used for black on black techniques although other techniques such as maki-e can be used with this technique as a base. See also yami-maki
